  • Freight moved (tonne-kilometres) increased roughly in line with economic growth (Gross Domestic Product) until 1998. Since then freight moved has remained stable despite an increase in 2007.

  • Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV) rose broadly in line with freight moved until 1997.   Overall emissions increased by 2 per cent between 1990 and 2008, compared with economic growth of 54 per cent over the same period.  (Figures have been revised and reflect significant improvements to the road transport inventory methodology, emissions factors and activity data.)
