  • Sustainable fisheries are essential for a healthy and diverse marine ecosystem. They are also important for a vibrant and long-term fishing industry.

  • During the 1990s the percentage of fish stocks considered to be harvested sustainably and at full reproductive capacity ranged from six per cent to 17 per cent, but had increased to 50 per cent by 2008.

  • Despite these increases, between 50 to 78 per cent of the indicator stocks have either reduced reproductive capacity or have been harvested unsustainably since 2001.
