- The public sector generates about 18 per cent of UK Gross Value Added (monetary output), employs a quarter of workers, and produces 4 per cent of UK carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
- Public sector GVA rose by 31 per cent between 1990 and 2008. CO2 emissions from the sector’s energy use and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions fell by 29 per cent and 41 per cent respectively.
