The Government’s National Strategy on Sustainable Development

The UK Government and devolved governments are pursuing their goal of sustainable development –  to enable all people throughout the world to satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a better quality of life, without compromising the quality of life of future generations – in an integrated way through:

  • a sustainable, innovative and productive economy that delivers high levels of employment
  • a just society that promotes social inclusion, sustainable communities and personal wellbeing
  • protection and enhancement of the physical and natural environment, and efficient use of resources and energy
  • promotion of a clear understanding of, and commitment to, sustainable development so that all people can contribute to the overall goal through their individual decisions

The Government’s overarching strategy for sustainable development is detailed in Securing the Future (see downloads, right).

Sustainable development across the UK and the devolved governments

Our vision of a sustainable government
The UK Government has a crucial role to play in putting us on the path to sustainability. By leading the shift to a more equitable, low-carbon economy the Government can reduce our environmental impact earth while improving quality life across the UK.

Who does what?
Sustainable development is relevant to the policies and operations of all government departments and bodies. Defra, DECC and the SDC have key responsibilities for aspects of sustainable development and its implementation throughout the Government.

Other Government Departments and Sustainable Development
All Government departments are applying sustainable development to their policies and operations. Every department has created a Sustainable Development Action Plan detailing its commitments.

Devolved Government
The devolved governments of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are working in parallel towards sustainability in their regions. Each government has its own strategy, including further priorities and supported by further measures and indicators, based on their different responsibilities, needs and views.
