October 2004 Local Sourcing, Distribution Advice for Regional Food and Drink Producers aims to help address one of the main barriers to the encouragement of more local sourcing and highlights a number of successful initiatives some of which have been part-funded under the Defra funded England Rural Development Programme (ERDP).
It comprises a step-by-step guide to help producers understand the distribution options available to them; whether they want to service the local community with their own van, or link up with a major manufacturer to expand their distribution nationally. The guide was produced by the IGD with support from Food From Britain under its Defra funded Regional Food programme:

October 2004 This guide Local Sourcing - Opening the Door for Small Business includes information gathered from the local sourcing workshops and from discussions with major supermarkets, convenience chains, foodservice distributors and operators in the UK.

Following on from this, Defra helped fund a Business in The Community (BiTC) and IGD guide for small businesses looking to work with large food retailers and foodservice companies.
