ARCHIVE: Latest situation: Equine Infectious Anaemia

24 June 2011 - An expert assessment has found there is a very low risk of Equine Infectious Anaemia being spread in the UK from British horses that have visited infected areas in Europe. However, this low risk remains dependent on owners and private vets regularly assessing horses for clinical signs, when abroad and back in the UK, and reporting any suspicion to the AHVLA. The disease is currently circulating in Italy and Romania. See:

30 March 2011 – Following the two cases of Equine Infections Anaemia in September 2010, Defra has today published the reports of the epidemiological  investigations and a lessons learned report.

23 December 2010 - Following the detection of Equine Infectious Anaemia on the premises in Devon on 11 September 2010, all the remaining horses on the holding were sampled for testing. We have now received the final 90 day blood test results from these remaining horses, which confirms that all horses have tested negative. The owner of the Infected Premises has now been informed of the negative results and restrictions were lifted on 22 December 2010.

16 December 2010 -  Following the detection of Equine Infectious Anaemia on the premises in Northumberland on 7 September 2010, all the remaining horses on the holding were sampled for testing. We have now received the final 90 day blood test results from these remaining horses, which confirms that all horses have tested negative. The owner of the Infected Premises has now been informed of the negative results and restrictions have been lifted.

21 September 2010 The two donkeys near to the premises in Devon have tested negative for Equine Infectious Anaemia.

15 September 2010 - As part of the detailed ongoing investigation into the case of EIA in Devon, two donkeys are also being tested for EIA as a routine precaution. Both donkeys appear healthy and are not showing clinical signs of EIA. Movement restrictions have been put in place on these donkeys.

14 September 2010 – The remaining 2 horses on the premises in Devon have tested negative for Equine Infectious Anaemia.

11 September 2010 – Equine Infectious Anaemia has been detected in a horse in Devon. For more information, see press release

10 September 2010 – The remaining horses on the premises in Northumberland have tested negative for Equine Infectious Anaemia.

7 September 2010 - Equine Infectious Anaemia has been detected in a horse in Northumberland following importation from the Netherlands, Defra confirmed on Tuesday 7 September 2010. The premises is currently under restriction and the horse has been humanely destroyed in line with existing regulations. The other horses on the premises are subject to epidemiological investigation.
