Joint Announcement of the Agricultural Departments of the United Kingdom
The latest national statistics produced by Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on Food Transport Indicators were released on 31 March 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
The latest data relates to 2009/2010.
The key points from this release are:
- The external impacts of food transport had been increasing to reach peaks in 2006 and 2007.
- But all four indicators are now on downward trends, with all having reduced further in 2009.

A methodological note describes the way data is combined and the assumptions that are made in forming the indicators.
The Validity of Food Miles as an Indicator of Sustainable Development by AEA Technology Environment, which was commissioned by Defra and published on 15 July 2005.
