Analysing the relationship between farming performance and environmental performance at the farm level

Farmers are sometimes reluctant to adopt environmental measures because they fear an impact on the financial performance of the farm. This work will use data from the Farm Business Survey (FBS) to see whether there are grounds for these fears, or whether farmers can be top performers in environmental terms whilst continuing to achieve financial success. The research will build on external research on the efficiency of FBS farms.

A report is expected in early 2011.

External projects

Evaluation of environmental impacts of 2003 Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reforms and the likely environmental implications of the CAP ‘Health Check’ regulations in England

This project (to be undertaken by SAC) will examine current and emerging information on changes in attitudes and practices at the farm level and assess the environmental implications of these. It will also contribute to the development of the tracking and reporting of patterns of change, as these emerge, and address gaps in monitoring data that have been identified in previous projects.

Results are due in autumn 2010.
