ARCHIVE: e-Digest Statistics about: Waste and Recycling
Resource recovery and recycling of materials from waste streams
Under the Producer Responsibilities Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulation 1997 (as amended) packaging data is required to be submitted to the relevant agencies. This data forms the basis of the UK reporting to the European Commission. Only obligated organisations submit data. Defra then estimates a total to include the non-obligated volumes arising. Obligated organisations are those with a turnover in excess of GBP2m per annum who handle over 50 tonnes of packaging in a year.
Table 24 summarises the volumes of packaging materials recycled and estimates the percentage of total arisings that represents.
Paper continues to be the star performer but plastic packaging, continues to lag a long way behind. Wood was not initially one of the packaging materials for which a recovery target was set but it is now included in the set of targets.
