The amount of household waste collected in England in 2007/08 was 25.3 million tonnes. 34.5% of this waste was sent for recycling or composting. This household recycling rate has increased from 7.5% in 1996/97. Green recycling (composting) has increased from just 1% in 1996/97 to 13% in 2007/08 and dry recycling has increased from 6% in 1996/97 to 22% in 2006/07.
