ARCHIVE: New technologies demonstrator programme

Defra launched the New Technologies Demonstrator Programme (NTDP)  to demonstrate innovative waste treatments technologies as possible alternatives to landfill. 9 projects covering a variety of different waste treatment technologies were originally selected. The programme aimed to prove the economic, social and environmental viability (or not) of each selected technology.

Each site had a visitor centre open throughout the plant’s participation in the programme. These enabled representatives from local authorities and the waste sector to see the sites operating and to learn more about the particular strengths and weaknesses of the technologies.

The Programme was guided and supported by a Technologies Advisory Committee (TAC) whose members were drawn from a wide spectrum of industry and stakeholder groups.

Each NTDP project produced a report on their experiences, lessons learnt and the strengths and weaknesses of their technology:

An independent research, monitoring and evaluation (RME) review was also carried out on the projects.  These reviews have been peer reviewed.

Factsheets for each of the projects are also available.
