ARCHIVE: Soil monitoring
As part of Defra's consideration of soil monitoring mechanisms in England, and the accessibility and use of soils data, each of the six main datasets containing English soils information is outlined here:
- Representative Soil Sampling Scheme
- Land Information System
- Countryside Survey
- Environmental Change Network
- Geochemical Baseline Survey of the Environment
- Multi-Agency Geographic Information for the Countryside (MAGIC)
Project SP0515 (completed March 2003) compared the compatibility of data derived from four of these datasets (NSI, RSSS, CS2000, ECN). It was found that each of the monitoring schemes is valid and consistent to its aims and the achievement of those aims.
Each scheme covers different soil/land use combinations, with sampling designs devised to answer the specific demands created by the scheme rationales.
