Latest news

We’ve added a range of new resources and guidance to these web pages that will help policy and decision makers put the value of the natural environment at the heart of what they do:

Adapting to Climate Change

Defra has published a supplement to our Climate Change Plan which looks at the impact climate change will have on our natural resources and the services we get from them; and seeks to stimulate debate about how we should approach adaptation to climate change in the natural environment.

Government’s actions to take an ecosystem approach

Help with valuing the natural environment in your work

Government’s overarching vision for the natural environment is stated in the Natural Environment Public Service Agreement:

"To secure a diverse, healthy and resilient natural environment, which provides the basis for everyone’s well-being, health and prosperity now and in the future; and where the value of the services provided by the natural environment are reflected in decision-making."

The services that natural systems provide are often referred to as ecosystem services. These natural environment policy pages are designed to give an introduction to our work in this area and, particularly, to help decision makers  to take the value of the natural environment into account in a practical way by applying an ecosystems approach.

The Ecosystems approach action plan shows how we are embedding ecosystems thinking into policy-making and delivery on the natural environment.

Help us to improve these pages

We are in the process of developing the guidance and tools on applying an ecosystem approach further and will be updating these pages regularly over the next few months.  We would welcome any feedback you may have on the current web pages and ideas for future development: contact us.
