ARCHIVE: EU and international environment research and demonstration programmes

Defra has a direct interest in a number of international environmental research, technology and demonstration programmes and initiatives, including the European Union’s Framework Programme, the LIFE (Financial Instrument for the Environment) Programme, COST (European Co-operation in Science and Technology Research) and the research activities of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

We seek to ensure that Defra and UK policy objectives are met in the strategic formulation, coverage and content of these programmes.  We also seek complementarity between domestic and international research programmes and to ensure that Defra and interested UK organisations can secure maximum benefit from them.

We actively encourage UK organisations to take part in the EU’s Framework Programme and have set up a National Contact Point (NCP) service for the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) to ensure UK organisations are aware of the funding opportunities available, in particular within the Environment (including Climate Change)” and “Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, and Biotechnology” thematic areas.

The following links provide an overview of the EU Framework Programmes, COST, LIFE and OECD research programmes, together with details on how to access further information on them.
