Animal health 2009 – The Report of the Chief Veterinary Officer (PDF 2.7 MB). The report provides a definite record of government animal health and welfare activities across the UK and defines progress in relation to the strategic objectives contained in the Animal Health and Welfare Strategy for Great Britain.
This latest and final report presents a positive message for a year in which there were no outbreaks of exotic diseases while ensuring areas of continued disease risk are still recognised.
Highlights of the report include:
- Approval by the EU of the bovine TB eradication plan for England and recognition of Scotland as a TB free region of the EU;
- Global issues such as climate change and disease risks relating to ease of travel and trade;
- New ways of managing disease, such as bluetongue vaccination and the vaccination of badgers against bovine TB;
- The need for a more systematic and holistic approach to prioritising our efforts against a background of reduced resource; and
- Our response to emerging threats
