The implementation of robust monitoring processes

Key Elements

  1. Implement systems that improve demographic analysis of Defra personnel (September 2008)
  2. Work with stakeholders and staff to ensure confidentiality and trust in processes (September – December 2008)
  3. Making use of information gathered to eradicate racial discrimination and promote equality of opportunity for all (Ongoing)
  4. Work to become employer of choice amongst all communities at all levels within Defra (Ongoing)
  5. Use Census 2001 categories for ethnicity monitoring ( Ongoing)

Outcomes
Defra efficiently captures and makes use of information about ethnicity which uses Office of National Statistics classifications (see Appendix 7) to ensure the working environment is fair and free of racial discrimination. The services provided by Defra are accessible and equitable for all communities.

Performance/progress measures

  • Equalities monitoring regarding the recruitment, training, retention, grievance and disciplinary, leavers, progression and promotion practices across the Defra network
  • Staff surveys indicate trust and confidence in HR processes and a willingness to disclose information
  • A more ethnically diverse workforce at all levels across the Defra Network
  • Public satisfaction surveys in respect of trust and confidence in Defra
  • we will investigate any patterns of inequality revealed by our monitoring, and take remedial action to address any disparity or anomaly
